New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition (NBATC)

In November 1999, a group of stakeholders interested in tobacco control met to develop a New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Strategy. They hosted several consultations and reviewed many related documents. The strategy they drafted was based upon the New Directions for Tobacco Control – A National Strategy endorsed by federal/provincial/territorial Ministers of Health. The NBATC was formed to implement this strategy.

All recognized tobacco use as a public health problem that crosses all boundaries, including communication, economics, education, environment, health services, municipal planning, recreation, and tourism. All recognized the need for a coordinated comprehensive approach to effectively implement an anti-tobacco strategy.

It is through the commitment and action of all stakeholders, including, departments of government, non-government organizations, private sectors, communities and individuals that we will impact New Brunswick’s tobacco related disease and mortality rates.

NBATC Structure

The New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition is a network of concerned individuals and organizations supporting current partnerships and developing new opportunities to collaborate on anti-tobacco measures.

The structure of the NBATC consists of different levels of contribution and commitment; the Steering Committee; Working Group Members; Networks and Community Action Participants.

In general, the Stakeholder's role is to;

-  Annually review the Anti-Tobacco Strategy
-  Review key objectives and consider opportunities for the coming year
-  Help identify “leads” to coordinate actions under key objectives
-  Provide up-to-date information regarding their organizations’ or

    groups’ current anti-tobacco activities
-  Commit to actions that will support the Anti-Tobacco Strategy

Steering Committee

This group meets on a regular basis and acts on behalf of the NBATC to coordinate the implementation and evaluation of key objectives. It is comprised of individuals from organizations who have indicated a willingness to "lead" and coordinate a project or actions relating to a key objective.

The role of each "lead" is to:

-  Report progress to the Steering Committee as required
-  Establish working groups and obtain resources to support the implementation of action plans
-  Build new partnerships/relationships where possible
-  Support implementation of all action plans to encourage linkages amongst actions
-  Use a consensus approach to further develop or implement action plans
-  Report progress at annual meetings using recognized assessment tools

The NBATC is committed to “braiding” our efforts utilizing partnerships and evidence-based information to maximize impact and sustainability. To attain an effective, coordinated, and integrated New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Strategy, the Activity Leads must demonstrate concurrence with the implementation principles by briefly describing how each principle has been fulfilled. Click “Implementation Principles” for more information.

Working Groups

Working Group Members are groups or individuals working directly with an Steering Committee Member on a key objective. These members would attend meetings and/or work on activities designated by the working group as essential to achieving their objectives. Their time commitment may be short-term or long-term depending on the needs of the working group.

Networks

Networks are community level groups or individuals working on, or interested in, a similar issue. They may include those who are participating in common activities and who benefit from shared experiences, knowledge or common practices. Networks are usually formed by working groups to help build new partnerships and relationships with Community Action Participants while working towards a key objective. Current examples include the Tobacco-Free Schools Network and the Cessation Network.

Community Action Participants

Community Action Participants are groups or individuals who are involved in anti-tobacco measures through their work or activities at the community level, but do not have the time or ability to commit to regular meetings or activities.

Community Action Participants;

-  provide the NBATC with up-to-date information regarding their current anti-tobacco activities and interests

   through surveys
-  receive and respond to correspondence regarding the NBATC
-  receive invitations to attend Annual Forums
-  support current partnerships
-  help develop new opportunities to collaborate on anti-tobacco measures.

NBATC Vision
