NBATC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who can join the NBATC?

Anyone! If you or your organization is working on any type of anti-tobacco measures then you are a stakeholder with the New Brunswick Anti-Tobacco Coalition (NBATC).

As a NBATC Stakeholder, what would my level of commitment be?

It depends! The structure of the NBATC consists of different levels of contribution and commitment; the Steering Committee; Working Group Members; Networks and Participants.

Steering Committee - This group meets on a regular basis and acts on behalf of the NBATC to coordinate the implementation and evaluation of key objectives. It is comprised of individuals from those organizations who have indicated a willingness to lead and coordinate actions relating to a key objective.

Steering Committee Members must be willing to collaborate with and report progress to the Committee. They must also agree to obtain the resources required to support their actions, form working groups when appropriate, actively seek out new partnerships and use a consensus approach to develop or implement action plans.

Working Group Members - are groups or individuals working directly with a Steering Committee member on a key objective. These members would attend meetings and/or work on activities designated by the working group as essential to achieving their objective. Their time commitment may be short-term or long-term depending on the needs of the working group.

Networks - are community level groups or individuals working on, or are interested in, a similar issue. They may include those who are participating in common activities and who benefit from shared experiences, knowledge or common practices. Networks are usually formed by working groups to help build new partnerships and relationships with Participants while working towards a key objective. Current examples include the Tobacco-free Schools Network and the Cessation Support Network.

Participants - are groups or individuals who are involved in anti-tobacco measures through their work or activities at the community level, but do not have the time or ability to commit to regular meetings or activities. Participants would provide the NBATC with up-to-date information regarding their current anti-tobacco activities and interests, receive and respond to correspondence regarding the NBATC, receive invitations to attend Annual Forums, support current partnerships and may help develop new opportunities to collaborate on anti-tobacco measures.

Where does the NBATC receive its funding and support?

The NBATC is a coalition of various groups and organizations: It is not a separate entity of it’s own. As such, it does not have a dedicated budget. Member organizations support the Coalition’s work through monetary funding or “in-kind” contributions such as dedicated staff time and administrative support. Each organization brings resources to the table. If a gap is identified, then efforts are made to secure funding support through other avenues. We see this approach as crucial in building capacity, commitment and sustainability in New Brunswick.

Is the NBATC an advocacy group?

No! As we’ve mentioned before, the NBATC is a coalition of various groups and organizations and therefore, cannot speak for all of it’s members on every issue. It can, however, provide support to those who wish to play an advocacy role by providing them with information that may assist in their pursuit and/or connect them with groups or organizations working on a similar issue.

What is the purpose of the NBATC Website?

The NBATC website can be found at www.nbatc.ca . This website has been designed as a tool in which interested visitors can find out what the NBATC is, what the current activities are, and view new reports or documents being released by NBATC members. It is an information tool for use by NBATC stakeholders or potential stakeholders and is not designed for teaching or advocacy. Website updates are coordinated by the Steering Committee and we encourage stakeholders to contact the NBATC if they have activities or information that they wish to share on-line.
